Dr. Geoffrey Westrich Named "Top Doctor" in Highly Regarded Consumer Guides
(New York, N.Y. June 15, 2018.) Dr. Geoffrey Westrich, Director of Research for the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service at Hospital for Special Surgery, has been named a top orthopedic surgeon in several prestigious consumer guides this year, including New York magazine's newly published "2018 Best Doctors" issue.
Dr. Westrich specializes in diagnosing and treating complexes injuries and diseases of the hip and knee, treating adults of all ages. He specializes in joint replacement, revision surgery, minimally invasive hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, MAKO robotic-assisted surgery and complex hip and knee reconstruction. He chairs the Complex Case Preoperative Review Panel and the Infection Control Committee at Hospital for Special Surgery and serves on a number of additional hospital committees promoting patient care. He is also a Professor of Cinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
New York magazine’s "Best Doctors" issue is an annual guide that seeks to list the best physicians in the New York metro area, but is also a resource for prospective patients nationally and internationally. Those named in the highly competitive directory are selected based on a survey of their peers, taking into account professional qualifications, reputation, and skill in dealing with patients, according to the publisher.
"It’s an honor and a privilege to be among the physicians chosen for this guide. I believe it’s an indication that we are achieving our goal of providing outstanding and compassionate patient care in a very supportive setting," said Dr. Westrich.
The New York magazine honor is Dr. Westrich’s third major recognition this year. Last month, he was named to "Super Doctors," a directory published by MSP Communications. The list came out in a special insert in The New York Times and appeared online. Potential candidates are evaluated based on various indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement, including hospital appointments, leadership positions, academic achievements, publications, and professional activities, according to the publisher.
Earlier this year, Dr. Westrich was listed in the 2018 edition of "America's Top Doctors," which seeks to identify the best specialists in the country. Physicians who appear on the list are among the top one percent of specialists around the country, according to the publisher, Castle Connolly. The selection process, based on peer nominations, includes surveys of physicians and healthcare professionals who are asked to identify excellent doctors in every specialty in their region and nationwide. A physician-led research team carefully reviews the credentials of each doctor, according to Castle Connolly, which publishes the list on its website.
Dr. Westrich sees patients at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan and at an affiliated office in Fresh Meadows, Queens. In addition to his medical degree, which he received from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Westrich has a background in engineering. Upon graduating from Tufts School of Engineering, he was invited to join Eta Kappa Nu, a prestigious engineering honors society. His degree in engineering comes into play when he is called on to help design new and improved joint replacements and surgical instrumentation.
Dr. Westrich is a past president of the prestigious Eastern Orthopaedic Association and belongs to a number of professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Association, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Westrich is often called on by the media for his expertise. His successful efforts to save a woman’s leg after several doctors told her it needed to be amputated were featured as a "medical marvel" in New York magazine, as well as in several newspaper articles and television reports.
