Dr. Geoffrey Westrich Named President of Eastern Orthopaedic Association
(New York, N.Y. June 21, 2015.) Dr. Geoffrey Westrich, an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, was named president of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association at the organization's annual meeting in Hawaii on June 20.
Dr. Westrich, director of Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Research at the New York City hospital, said he was honored to be appointed president of the prestigious organization. “My goals are to continue to provide high quality education for our members and to grow the organization,” said Dr. Westrich, a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
The mission of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association is to promote, encourage, foster, and advance the field of orthopedic surgery and related matters, and to establish a forum for the free discussion and teaching of orthopedic methods and principles among its members.
Dr. Westrich sees patients at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan and at a hospital-affiliated office in Fresh Meadows, Queens. He dedicates his practice to hip and knee injuries and disease, specializing in joint replacement and complex revision surgery. He has additional expertise in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement, hip and knee reconstruction, and computer-assisted surgery. He has been chairman of the hospital's Complex Case Pre-Operative Review Panel since 2006.
Dr. Westrich conducts extensive research to advance the field and is considered a leading investigator in blood clot prevention following joint replacement. He has published hundreds of articles on this and other topics in peer-reviewed journals.
He writes a blog on orthopedic surgery topics to help consumers make informed decisions.
In addition to his medical degree, which he received from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Westrich has a background in engineering. Upon graduating from Tufts School of Engineering, he was invited to join Eta Kappa Nu, a prestigious engineering honors society. His degree in engineering comes into play when he is called on to help design new and improved joint replacements and surgical instrumentation.
Dr. Westrich completed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, followed by a hip and knee fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery. In addition to the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Association, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Westrich is often called upon by the media for his expertise. His successful efforts to save a woman's leg from amputation from the hip gained attention as a “medical miracle” in New York magazine, as well as in several newspaper articles and television reports.
